The MEXT Scholarship (Monbukagakusho), funded by Japan's Ministry of Education, is one of the most comprehensive and prestigious fully funded scholarships available for studying in Japan.
What MEXT Covers
- Full tuition waiver
- A monthly stipend, generally sufficient to cover living costs
- Round-trip airfare between your home country and Japan
- No repayment obligation
Types of MEXT Scholarships
- Research Students (graduate level): The most common route, often leading into a full master's or doctoral program.
- Undergraduate Students: For students starting a bachelor's degree in Japan.
- Teacher Training, Japanese Studies, and specialized tracks for specific fields.
Two Application Routes
- Embassy Recommendation: Apply through the Japanese embassy in your home country — the more common route.
- University Recommendation: Apply directly through a Japanese university with a MEXT allocation, often after establishing contact with a potential supervisor.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age limits that vary by program
- A completed prior qualification appropriate to your intended level of study
- Strong academic records
- Willingness to learn Japanese, even for English-taught programs
Application Timeline
Embassy-route applications typically open in Spring for enrollment the following April — start preparing well in advance, since the process involves multiple stages (application, written exam, interview) over several months.
