Goethe-Zertifikat A1 certifies the most basic level of German proficiency and is frequently the specific minimum requirement named in German student and spouse visa applications.

Test Format

  • Listening (Hören): Short everyday audio clips followed by comprehension questions.
  • Reading (Lesen): Short, simple texts with comprehension questions.
  • Writing (Schreiben): A short form to fill in and a short personal message or letter to write.
  • Speaking (Sprechen): A brief spoken exam covering self-introduction, asking/answering simple questions, and making a simple request.

What A1 Level Actually Means

A1 is the most basic CEFR level — you should be able to understand and use familiar, everyday expressions, introduce yourself and others, and interact simply if the other person speaks slowly.

How It's Scored

Each section is scored individually, and you need a minimum overall score to pass — check with your specific testing center for exact thresholds.

How to Prepare

  1. Focus on high-frequency everyday vocabulary — greetings, numbers, basic personal information.
  2. Practice basic sentence structure — present tense conjugation, simple word order, basic questions.
  3. Practice speaking out loud from day one, even at this basic level.
