If your target university accepts more than one English test, choosing between IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and PTE Academic often comes down to format preference and where you're applying — not which test is "easier." Here's how they actually compare.
Format at a Glance
- IELTS: Listening, Reading, Writing done on paper or computer; Speaking is a face-to-face (or video call) interview with a real examiner. Scored on the 1–9 band scale.
- TOEFL iBT: Entirely computer-based, including Speaking, which is recorded and sent for scoring — no live examiner. Scored 0–120.
- PTE Academic: Entirely computer-based and scored partly by AI, with results typically returned within 48 hours — the fastest turnaround of the three. Scored 10–90.
Speaking: Live Examiner vs. Microphone
This is the biggest practical difference. IELTS Speaking is a conversation with a real person, which suits test-takers who do better with natural back-and-forth interaction. TOEFL and PTE both have you speak into a microphone in a room with other candidates speaking around you — some people find this distracting, others prefer it to the pressure of a face-to-face interview.
Where Each Test Is Accepted
- IELTS is the most widely accepted globally and is typically required for UK, Australian, and New Zealand visas specifically.
- TOEFL iBT is especially dominant for US university admissions, though most US schools now also accept IELTS and PTE.
- PTE Academic is accepted by an increasing number of universities in Australia, the UK, and the US, and by Australian and New Zealand immigration for skilled visas.
Always confirm your specific university and visa category accepts your chosen test — don't assume based on country alone.
Scoring Speed
PTE usually returns results the fastest (often within 1–2 days), TOEFL iBT typically within 4–8 days, and IELTS within 3–13 days depending on the delivery format. If you're on a tight application deadline, this can matter as much as the test content itself.
Which One Should You Choose?
- Check what your target universities and visa category actually require or prefer.
- If you're comfortable with a live speaking interview, IELTS may suit you better. If you'd rather speak into a microphone alone, TOEFL or PTE may feel less stressful.
- If you need results fast, PTE has the quickest turnaround.
