The TOEFL Speaking section has four tasks — one independent and three integrated — each with a strict time limit for both preparation and speaking, which makes having a reliable structure genuinely useful under pressure.

Independent Task Template

You get 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak on a personal opinion or preference question.

  1. State your opinion clearly in one sentence.
  2. Give one main reason, with a brief specific example.
  3. Give a second reason if time allows, or a brief conclusion.

Integrated Task Template (Reading + Listening + Speaking)

You get 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak, summarizing information from a short reading passage and a related listening clip.

  1. State the main topic from the reading passage in one sentence.
  2. Summarize the reading's key point(s) briefly.
  3. Explain how the listening passage relates to the reading — this connection is usually the actual point being tested.

Integrated Task Template (Listening + Speaking Only)

Similar structure, but summarizing a lecture or conversation without an accompanying reading passage — focus on the main idea and key supporting points, in your own words.

Practicing Effectively

Practice under the exact time constraints from the start — most candidates initially run out of time because they haven't calibrated how much they can realistically say in 45-60 seconds.
