The F-1 visa is the standard US student visa for full-time academic study. Unlike some countries' more centralized systems, the US process runs through a specific sequence involving your university, the SEVIS system, and a US embassy or consulate interview.

Step 1: Receive Your I-20 Form

Once admitted and after proving you can cover a full year's tuition and living costs, your university's international student office issues Form I-20 — the core document proving your acceptance into a SEVP-certified program.

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee

This fee funds the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System that tracks F-1 students throughout their stay. Pay it online and keep the receipt.

Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Form

The DS-160 is the standard nonimmigrant visa application form, completed online, requiring your I-20 details, passport information, and a digital photo meeting US visa specifications.

Step 4: Pay the Visa Application Fee and Schedule Your Interview

Pay the MRV fee, then schedule your interview at the nearest US embassy or consulate. Wait times for interview slots vary significantly by location and season — book as early as possible.

Step 5: Prepare Your Documents

  • Passport valid for travel to the US
  • Form I-20, signed
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS fee payment receipt
  • Visa fee payment receipt
  • Academic transcripts and test scores
  • Financial evidence supporting the funding shown on your I-20

Step 6: Attend the Visa Interview

The consular officer's main job is to determine whether you intend to return home after your studies and whether you can genuinely afford your program. Be ready to clearly explain why you chose your specific university and program, how your studies connect to your career plans, who is funding your education, and your ties to your home country. See our visa interview questions guide for more preparation tips.

Step 7: Entry and the "30/60 Day Rule"

You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date listed on the I-20, and must leave within 60 days after your program ends unless approved for Optional Practical Training.
