The Schengen Visa allows short-term travel across the 27 countries in the Schengen Area using a single visa — a major convenience if you're planning to visit multiple European countries on one trip.
Which Country's Embassy Should You Apply Through?
You must apply through the embassy of your main destination (where you'll spend the most time), or if your time is split evenly, the country you'll enter first. Applying through the wrong country's embassy is a common and avoidable rejection reason.
Required Documents
- Valid passport (with at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned departure)
- Completed application form
- Travel/health insurance covering the entire Schengen Area
- Proof of accommodation for your entire stay
- A detailed travel itinerary
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Evidence of ties to your home country
The 90/180-Day Rule
A Schengen visa typically allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period — a rolling window, so previous visits within the same 180 days count against your allowance.
How to Apply
- Determine the correct embassy based on your itinerary.
- Complete the application form and gather all required documents.
- Book an appointment and pay the visa fee.
- Attend your appointment, which may include a short interview.
Apply well in advance — processing can take several weeks. See our Study in Germany guide if considering a longer-term move rather than a short visit.
