Canada's visit visa is officially called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), covering tourism, visiting family or friends, and short business trips. Nationals of certain countries can use an eTA instead if arriving by air — check which applies to your nationality first.
Required Documents
- Valid passport
- Proof of funds to cover your trip
- A clear explanation of your purpose of visit and travel itinerary
- Evidence of ties to your home country demonstrating intent to return
- An invitation letter, if visiting family or friends
- A medical exam, in some cases
How Long Can You Stay?
Visitors are typically authorized to stay up to 6 months per visit, determined by the border services officer at your port of entry.
What This Visa Does NOT Allow
- Studying a program requiring a study permit (see our Canada study permit guide)
- Working in Canada, with very limited exceptions
How to Apply
- Determine whether you need a full TRV or qualify for the simpler eTA.
- Complete the online application through the IRCC portal.
- Upload supporting documents and pay the application fee.
- Provide biometrics at a Visa Application Centre, if required.
See our Visit Visa vs. Student Visa guide if you're considering visiting first before applying to study.
