The US B1/B2 visa is actually two closely related categories combined into one visa in practice — B1 for business visits and B2 for tourism and visiting family or friends. Most applicants receive a combined B1/B2 visa covering both purposes.
Required Documents
- Valid passport
- Completed DS-160 online application form
- A recent digital photo meeting US visa specifications
- Evidence of funds to cover your trip
- Evidence of ties to your home country demonstrating intent to return
- An invitation letter or itinerary, depending on your purpose of visit
The Interview Requirement
Almost all B1/B2 applicants must attend an in-person interview. The consular officer's central concern is whether you intend to return home — be ready to clearly explain your purpose, your ties to home, and your travel plans.
How Long Can You Stay?
The visa itself can be valid for multiple years, but each individual entry is typically authorized for up to 6 months by the border officer at the port of entry.
What This Visa Does NOT Allow
