A study claiming that a new supplement "boosts memory by 40%" was funded entirely by the supplement's manufacturer, used a sample of just eighteen participants, and had no control group. Critical readers should ask: who funded this, how large and representative was the sample, and was there anything to compare the result against? A striking headline is not evidence; it is, at best, an invitation to look more closely.
