正式写作中的倒装

除了前置否定状语外,正式和文学英语还在条件句"had/were/should"(不带"if")之后以及某些地点状语之后使用倒装,增添正式或戏剧性的语气。

Examples

• Had I known, I would have acted differently.
• Were she to arrive late, the meeting would proceed without her.
• Should you need assistance, please contact the front desk.
• Down the hill rolled the ball.
• So great was the pressure that the pipe finally burst.
