Negation with لا and ليس

لا negates present-tense verbs and general statements. ليس negates nominal (verb-less) sentences, and it conjugates to match the subject — ليس for 'he,' ليست for 'she.'

Examples

• أنا لا أفهم. (ana la afham) — I don't understand.
• هو ليس طالباً. (huwa laysa taliban) — He is not a student.
• هي ليست طبيبة. (hiya laysat tabiba) — She is not a doctor.
• هذا ليس كتابي. (hatha laysa kitabi) — This is not my book.
• أنا لا أعرف. (ana la a'rif) — I don't know.
