Questions with 吗 and Question Words

Add 吗 (ma) to the end of a statement to turn it into a yes/no question — word order doesn't change. For other questions, use words like 什么 (shénme, what), 哪里 (nǎlǐ, where), 谁 (shéi, who) in the position where the answer would go.

Examples

• 你是学生吗?(Nǐ shì xuéshēng ma?) — Are you a student?
• 这是什么?(Zhè shì shénme?) — What is this?
• 你去哪里?(Nǐ qù nǎlǐ?) — Where are you going?
• 他是谁?(Tā shì shéi?) — Who is he?
• 你喜欢咖啡吗?(Nǐ xǐhuan kāfēi ma?) — Do you like coffee?
